I am working on the next book but I don't know when I will be finished. There are actually several projects I am busy with, so I am torn among them but I hope to get something out soon.

Meanwhile there are more adult (!) braces sightings on screens !

The movie Greener Grass is coming out soon in the US — October 18. And the official description begins:

In a day-glo-colored, bizarro version of suburbia where adults wear braces on their already-straight teeth

Wow! And check out the trailer:

And there's also a short movie version (15 min) that you can watch on Vimeo here.

Then there's also a TV show with Kirsten Dunst that has her wearing braces: On Becoming a God in Central Florida.

Looks good:

Hope all my readers are having a great year — and that all the kids with braces have had a great start toschool!
But I just haven't had the time. I hope readers are at least catching up on and enjoying the old ones.

I hope everyone is looking forward to a great 2019, and I hope I will have some new braces content for you!

Meantime, I just saw this, which is cool. There's a TV show on Hulu called PEN15 and the two main actresses are adults but they play 7th graders — and so it's really cool to see that they have braces. Well, one has braces, the other a retainer.

Check it out !

How cool is that?

There's an interview with them here.

And with college graduation season in full swing, why not consider giving an Intraoral Press book as a graduation gift?

I hope all my readers have great summer plans ahead. I hope to have a new book — or a couple? — ready soon....but I don't know how soon yet. Hope you're not all getting too impatient!Catherinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02653454231410370964noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28288342.post-467284644493253332017-12-25T13:12:00.000+00:002017-12-25T13:12:15.123+00:00Merry Christmas!I wish all of you a very merry Christmas — with and without braces, but hopefully with some of my braces books!
It’s that time of the year when the kids head off to college and university all over. And of course everyone is happy about it. The kids moving ahead in life and setting out on their own and all that. But there’s a feeling of sadness too. Which is why I think Mothers, Daughters, Braces is such an ideal feel-good book for moms and daughters to share when the kids head back to school! So much to sink into, about shared feelings and all that teen stuff they went through. Of course it’s not the same mother-daughter experience – but I think that’s part of the fun of the book. That it gives you a much bigger story than the one you faced yourself!

My girls know about my writing, but they’re usually not that interested in it. At first I was sort of relieved, especially when they were younger. Now I try hard not to be disappointed! I would have thought that they would be more curious, but they really have their own things and don’t have the patience to deal with mom’s stuff. But I did give both of them Mothers, Daughters, Braces and asked them to tell me what they thought.

They actually both read it! The older one really quickly, the younger one bit by bit over most of the summer. Of course they thought some of it was weird and parts made them uncomfortable. Especially the parts that reminded them too exactly of their own experiences, since I did use some of those in the book. They both said they really liked it – though I know, they had to, mom wrote it. But especially the older one really reacted to it. A couple of evenings this summer, she actually came and sat down to talk with me, and she told me about parts of the book that really spoke to her, which was so rewarding. She was the one who had a tougher time with her braces (and the whole teenage years), and it was great to see that maybe this helped a little with dealing with that – even though she’s already been out of braces for so long. But she hasn’t really gotten over having them yet – I don’t think anyone ever does, but her sister is sort of able to park it away in her memory better – and she really found the book helpful with that. She even asked me for a printed copy of the book – they both read it on their iPads – and she took that with her to school. Which was like the best feeling ever for me, that she wanted to have that near her, and in the real, substantial format. Even if for them the electronic version is just as real and substantial – I’m still old-school… And I like the idea that it will be on her bookshelf, and when her friends ask, “What’s that?” she can say, “Oh that – my mom wrote that!”

It's a big (and expensive) book, but I really think the paperback version is the one to have.

Of course I know most of my readers prefer ebooks — and it is true that this one is easier to hold in ereader format. Maybe even if you're carrying around your laptop! (The paperback is big!) So you can always get it on Kindle, as an iBook, or an ePub.
Mothers, Daughters,Braces is definitely my empty-nest book. It started out as something
completely different – even with a different title – but I was quickly and
inexorably pulled towards this story. It just shaped itself into this, almost
without my doing. That’s how it seemed, anyway.

It also became much more than I had originally expected.
But there was so much to say! (Isn’t there always, when it comes to braces?) And
I really think it works – I think the length is justified. I hope a lot of
readers enjoy losing themselves in this story for so long.

This was so much fun to write – even if it also made me
feel nostalgic. It still feels so personal, even though it isn’t at all my
story, or the story of my girls – yes, I had braces as a kid, and I had two
braced daughters, but we certainly didn’t have the Dr.Wrighting-experience and
our treatment and experiences weren’t really like a lot that happens in Mothers, Daughters, Braces. But I think
that’s also why the novel works – because so many people, especially mothers
and daughters, can relate to the characters and what they go through, even if
it’s very different from what they went (or are going…!) through, the same way I
could relate to everything as I was writing it.

I hope readers enjoy it as much – and get as much out of
it! – as I did writing it!.

Mothers, Daughters, Braces

What is it?
The latest Dr.Samantha Wrighting novel from Intraoral Press.

What is it about?

It’s about mothers and daughters.
There’s Rachel and Alexis – the mother who refused to get braces when she was a girl, and the daughter who now needs them but doesn’t want them either.
There’s Dr.Wrighting and Natalie – the strict orthodontist and the devoted daughter, who can’t imagine life without braces.

It’s about braces.
The conflicted feelings about getting them and having them. The burdens and joys, the embarrassments and satisfactions, the highs and the lows.

It’s about growing up – and growing up with braces.
It’s about being a parent – and being the parent of a teen in braces.
It’s about friendship.
It’s about family.
It’s about the bonds that are strengthened by braces.

It’s a simple story – but like any honest story about having braces, there’s so much more to it. How can Rachel and her husband Andrew convince Alexis to get braces? What does Rachel learn about herself as she struggles to find a way to get Alexis to do the right and necessary thing? What surprising decision does Rachel make along the way? What kind of friendships and bonds develop when Rachel and Alexis enter Dr.Wrighting’s orthodontic world? And just how hard is it to face the world in braces? Mothers, Daughters, Braces is full of memorable characters and events as Rachel and Alexis travel on this twisted orthodontic journey.

How long is it?
Long! Epic! A quarter of a million words. 635 pages of braced reading pleasure.

Where can I get it?
In print: from Lulu

(And it will be available in print from your local retailer and Amazon and Barnes & Noble soon, as well as as an iBook.)
That's me! I hope you find it interesting — and I reveal the title of the new book! (It is still very much in the works. And it is HUGE. I want to get it out in time that readers can have a great braces summer read, but it is a lot of work.)Catherinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02653454231410370964noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28288342.post-89612865005427191212017-05-14T17:47:00.000+01:002017-05-14T17:47:09.581+01:00Mother's DayI wish I had my book finished because it would be a perfect Mother's Day book, but there's still too much to do with it! But I hope it's ready in time so you can have it as one of your big summer reads. It is definitely going to be big....

Even though I already got to celebrate Mother's Day — here in England they do it at the end of March (aka Mothering Day!) — my husband makes sure the girls remember how it's done in the US. Of course it's tougher now that they're not nearby, but at least they and he make a very nice effort.

Even though I haven't had a new book out in a while, I'm really pleased to see new readers continue to find the other ones. And it's neat that more people have been buying the paperbacks! The print versions seem more real to me too — even after I've "e-published" the book, it's never really real to me until I have the printed book in my hands.

But no matter how you read them, I hope you're enjoying them!Catherinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02653454231410370964noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28288342.post-68063706155746442972017-04-30T15:18:00.001+01:002017-04-30T17:04:23.623+01:00Alyson Gerber’s "Braced"One of the reasons I started writing orthodontic fiction is because there is so little about what it's like to have braces. There are really few books which are about having braces — so I was excited to hear about Alyson Gerber’s Braced. It's NOT about orthodontic braces but it's about a girl who has to wear a back brace because she has scoliosis (her back is getting more and more curved, and the brace prevents it from getting more deformed), and it turns out the experience, and the feelings about the experience, are a lot the same.

Gerber does a really good job of describing the difficulties of being braced, from the discomfort and pain, to the embarrassment and humiliation, and trying to react normally to how people react to it. And all of it is exactly like having orthodontic braces is like!

She really gets and explains it, summing it up in an author's note, where she admits:

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;">Over time my brace became easier to manage
physically, but emotionally I never adjusted. During the two years and four
months I spent in a brace, I didn’t open up to anyone about how alone and
insecure I felt. I held my pain inside. It took all of my strength to go to
school acting like nothing had changed, while at the same time feeling
uncomfortable and exposed. I used my brace as a shield, because I didn’t want anyone
to see me the way I saw myself—as different. As an adult, I can see that was a
mistake. I never stopped hating my brace, and it was such a big part of who I
was every day that it had a negative effect on my self-image.

That is so exactly how I feel about braces — and I think a lot of other kids and adults who have been through it do too. And of course that's also what I try to do in a lot of my books. To work through that, and try to help others work through that.

So the one thing that was really disappointing about this book — in which Rachel, the girl with the braces, is in seventh grade! — was that NO ONE has braces. None of her friends or classmates. Maybe Gerber thinks braces are like so widespread and 'normal' that it isn't even noticeable or worth mentioning. But I think the kids with braces on their teeth are feeling a lot like Rachel is, and it would have been neat to see some of them, and their pain, acknowledged here too.

I posted my review of the book at Goodreads. And despite there not being any orthodontically braced characters, I can still recommend it a lot.Catherinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02653454231410370964noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28288342.post-44238340935454825602017-04-23T17:40:00.000+01:002017-04-23T17:40:04.819+01:00Progress reportI can report progress! Easter week was good, and the holiday on Monday too, and I continue to manage to find time to write. Yes this was a good weekend too.

At least I am focusing on just one project now. It's going really well, but it's also really big.... At least you have a lot to look forward to! Lots of pages anyway! (And I hope a good story too)
Because of course I got sidetracked and decided I had to try something else too and I thought it would be a short one to tide you over but instead it really exploded on me and has become this whole big thing...

So eventually there's going to be lots for you to read — just not as soon as I would like.

I won't even try to tell you what they're all about! It turns out they take on a life of their own while I'm writing them, pulling me to places I hadn't imagined going. So I don't even know where they'll wind up yet! Which is cool and scary and fun. And I hope when they're finished you'll like them too.Catherinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02653454231410370964noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28288342.post-42952766856768581302017-01-11T16:52:00.003+00:002017-01-11T16:52:45.121+00:00Happy New Year!I'm sorry I haven't posted or published anything so long! I thought I would have more time over the holidays, but of course I just had even less time.

There is a big new book in the works, and I have a lot of it finished, but it's still going to be a while before I can publish it.

I hope all of you have a great 2017, and that you're not too impatient for the next book!Catherinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02653454231410370964noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28288342.post-46516794704392543162016-08-20T21:24:00.000+01:002016-08-20T21:24:27.309+01:00Paperback discountI've been meaning to post that now, with summer almost over, and with school starting again a lot of kids are also taking that big step of getting braces, and that it's the perfect time to get them a copy of Brooke in Braces. And that this is one of the titles readers might prefer in paperback (while most of the Dr.Wrighting books are more popular as ebooks).

Now is the perfect opportunity to get the paperback of Brooke in Braces, or any of the other Intraoral Press books in paperback, because if you buy them directly from Lulu before midnight on August 24th you get 25% off, if you use the code "AUG2016". That's a great deal! 25% off!

It only applies to paperbacks, not ebooks, but if you've been wanting to complete your collection of Intraoral Press titles in paperback, or if there's a girl you know who is facing getting braces, or who has them, and who could really use a copy of Brooke in Braces, now is the time to get them!Catherinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02653454231410370964noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28288342.post-61785114392481596412016-06-26T10:03:00.000+01:002016-06-26T10:03:10.072+01:00Brooke in Braces as iBook!Like I just told you in my last post, I really think Brooke in Braces is worth getting as a print book — like you now can (at Amazon and so on). But I know a lot of you do prefer to read ebooks....

So great news: not only is Brooke in Braces available on Kindle, but now it's also available as an iBook/on iTunes, which I know some of you prefer!

Whichever way you read it, I hope you enjoy it!Catherinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02653454231410370964noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28288342.post-55832881599659975872016-06-24T17:54:00.000+01:002016-06-24T17:54:15.681+01:00Brooke in Braces in paperback!I finally got to see the paperback edition of Brooke in Braces and I really love the way it looks! I know most Intraoral Press readers like the ebook versions, but I think this is one that is really worth having in print. Especially for its intended audience of tweens and teens getting or dealing with braces!

Brooke in Braces was already available in paperback from Lulu, but now it is also available through regular outlets. You can probably even already get your local bookstore to order it but Amazon has got you covered too, in the US, the UK, and Germany and everywhere else!

I hope you'll consider getting it for that special girl who is dealing with getting or having braces! (I hope boys like it too, but I have to admit that, beginning with the cover, it really is a girly book....)Catherinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02653454231410370964noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28288342.post-5342069888100523142016-06-12T18:04:00.001+01:002016-06-12T18:04:33.456+01:00What characters from the Dr.Samantha Wrighting novels have to say about "Brooke in Braces"

this forthrightness as she faces up to her fears, concerns and simple day to

“Among my favorite mother-daughter memories is the one of
reading Brooke in Braces with Emma as
she was undergoing her own orthodontic treatment. It made it so much easier to
talk about what she was going through, and we both learnt a lot about ourselves
and each other in the process. Brooke’s experiences weren’t as adventurous or
dramatic as those of some of the heroines in other books we read, but we could
really relate to her. Even now, she is one of the characters who is dearest to
our hearts, and the book one that we continue to cherish.”

My new book, Brooke in Braces.

This is a bit different than the usual Dr.Samantha Wrighting novels. It's aimed at a younger audience, of kids who are getting braces or who have them. It tells their story, of what they can expect and what they go through — by having Brooke Dilston tell her story. It is: A very personal history of one girl's life & times & experiences with braces. And I hope it helps other kids with their experiences in braces..

This is a YA title. It even features a different orthodontist, since let's face it, Dr.Wrighting and the Dr.Wrighting experience are a bit intense....

It's already available in print from Lulu and should be available on Amazon and at other retailers in a few weeks. I'll let you know when.

It is also already available on Kindle, and as an e-book from Lulu, with the iBook and Nook and all the other platforms also hopefully available soon.

I know most readers prefer the Intraoral Press books as e-books, but I think this is one that parents and kids might really like to have as a printed book, to read again and again as they go through this journey of their own.
